Random Water Type Pokémon Generator

Random Water-Type Pokémon

Wimpod
Pick a random Water-type Pokémon from all 154 Water types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Water-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Water-type Pokémon from all 154 species that have Water as one of their types, from Squirtle to Walking Wake. 74 of them are pure Water types, and the other 80 pair Water with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Water-type Pokémon draw on sea, river and lake life: fish, turtles, otters, frogs and marine mammals. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Water-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Water-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Water Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Water type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Water-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Water moves

  • Super effective against: Ground, Rock, Fire
  • Not very effective against: Water, Grass, Dragon
  • No effect on: none

When defending as a Water type

  • Weak to: Grass, Electric
  • Resists: Steel, Fire, Water, Ice
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Water-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Water-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Water types needs teammates that can take the hits Water can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Grass attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass, Dragon
  • Electric attacks: resisted by Ground, Grass, Electric, Dragon

Common type pairings

80 of the 154 Water-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Water/Rock: 11 Pokémon
  • Water/Ground: 9 Pokémon
  • Water/Ice: 8 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Water types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Water-type Pokémon by generation

How many Water-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Gen 1: 32 Gen 2: 18 Gen 3: 28 Gen 4: 14 Gen 5: 17 Gen 6: 9 Gen 7: 13 Gen 8: 11 Gen 9: 12

Tips for battling with Water types

Water moves hit Ground, Rock, Fire Pokémon for double damage, so a Water-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Water types get the most out of Water moves.

How to Use the Water-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Water team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Grass, Electric.
  • Type-locked challenge runs: Only catch the Water-type Pokémon the generator picks for your next playthrough or Nuzlocke.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Water-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
