Pick a random Gen 2 Pokémon from all 100 species of the Johto generation. Great for nostalgia runs, draft leagues, challenge runs, and trivia.

About the Random Gen 2 Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Pokémon from the 100 species introduced in Generation II, the Johto generation. The list runs in National Pokédex order from Chikorita to Celebi, and every species first discovered in this generation is included, from the starters to the Legendary Pokémon.

Gen 2 began with Pokémon Gold and Silver, first released in Japan in 1999. For many players, the Pokémon of a single generation are tied to a particular console, a particular region map, and a particular time in their lives. That makes a Gen 2 picker a quick way to revisit favourites, discover species you skipped, or set up a challenge that stays true to the Johto era.

Each result is a species, not an alternate form. Regional variants and other forms added in later games are counted under the generation where the species first appeared. If you want Pokémon from every generation at once, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the Legendary and Starter generators focus on those groups across every region.

Generation 2 and the Johto Region

Starters

Trainers in Pokémon Gold and Silver choose their first partner from three starter Pokémon: Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile. As in every generation, the three cover Grass, Fire and Water, so each one is strong against one of the others and weak to the third.

Legendary and Mythical Pokémon

6 Legendary and Mythical Pokémon debuted in Gen 2: Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi. Legendary Pokémon usually appear once per game as part of the story, while Mythical Pokémon have mostly been given out through special events.

The Johto Region and Its Pokémon

Johto is based on the Kansai region of Japan and parts of Chūbu, known for its temples and traditions. It sits next to Kanto, and Gold and Silver famously let players travel back to Kanto after the main story. HeartGold and SoulSilver later remade the region for the Nintendo DS.

Most common types in Gen 2

Of the 100 Pokémon introduced in this generation, 51 have a single type and 49 have two. These types appear most often:

  • Flying: 19 Pokémon
  • Water: 18 Pokémon
  • Normal: 15 Pokémon
  • Grass: 10 Pokémon
  • Fire: 10 Pokémon

Tips for a Gen 2-only run

Limiting yourself to the 100 Pokémon of Gen 2 is a popular way to relive the Johto games or to give a newer game a fresh challenge. Decide early whether Pokémon that gained a new evolution in a later generation may evolve past their Gen 2 form, and whether the Legendaries are allowed. With 49 dual-type Pokémon in the list, rolling a few extra candidates and picking the ones that cover each other's weaknesses makes a balanced team much easier to build.

How to Use the Gen 2 Pokémon Generator

  • Johto-only challenge runs: Replay Pokémon Gold and Silver or a remake and only use the Gen 2 Pokémon the generator picks.
  • Draft leagues: Take turns rolling to draft teams limited to Gen 2 species.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask players for the result's type, its evolution line or where it is found in Johto.
  • Nostalgia sketch sessions: Draw a random Gen 2 Pokémon from memory, then compare it with the real design.
  • Team building: Roll six times for a random Johto team and see how far it gets you.
