Random Legendary Pokémon Generator
This generator picks a random Legendary or Mythical Pokémon from all 94 in the National Pokédex: 71 Legendary Pokémon and 23 Mythical Pokémon. It covers every generation, from Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres in Kanto to Koraidon, Miraidon and the Paldea Legendaries.
Legendary Pokémon are the rare, powerful creatures at the heart of each game's story. They're often tied to the region's myths, and you can usually catch only one of each per save file. That makes them popular picks for "legendary only" team challenges, trivia rounds, fan art and collecting goals.
Each result is a species, and alternate forms such as Primal Groudon or Origin Forme Giratina aren't listed separately. The list follows the official Legendary and Mythical classifications used by the games.
Legendary Pokémon can be found during normal play, usually as part of the main story or the post-game. They include "box legendaries" such as Ho-Oh, Kyogre and Zacian, which appear on the games' box art, and smaller groups such as the legendary birds, the Lake Guardians and the Tapu island guardians. Many come in pairs or trios linked by a shared legend.
Mythical Pokémon are even rarer. Most of them can't be caught through normal play and have been given out through special events, promotions or connected games. Mew was the first: it was hidden in the code of the original games and first given away in Japan through a magazine promotion. Others include Celebi, Jirachi, Darkrai, Victini and Zarude.
Every Legendary and Mythical Pokémon has the same 1 in 94 chance on each roll, so the famous box legendaries are no more likely than the lesser-known guardians and event Pokémon.
The mascots on each game's cover, usually met at the climax of the story.
Sets of Legendaries linked by a shared legend, often roaming or hidden around the region.
Event-exclusive Pokémon that most players only see through special distributions.
Legendary Pokémon are usually hard to catch, and in most games you get one chance per save file. Save before the encounter, lower the Legendary's HP with a move like False Swipe that always leaves it with at least 1 HP, and inflict sleep or paralysis to improve your odds. Dusk Balls work well in caves and at night, and Timer Balls improve the longer the battle goes on. Many players keep their one Master Ball for a roaming Legendary or the hardest catch in the game.
Legendary Pokémon usually have higher base stats than ordinary Pokémon, which is why many competitive formats restrict them. Some official formats allow only a limited number of the most powerful ones per team, and others ban them completely. Casual play has no such rules, so a random Legendary team is a good way to try Pokémon you might never use competitively.
