Random Gen 8 Pokémon

Pick a random Gen 8 Pokémon from all 96 species of the Galar generation. Great for nostalgia runs, draft leagues, challenge runs, and trivia.

About the Random Gen 8 Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Pokémon from the 96 species introduced in Generation VIII, the Galar generation. The list runs in National Pokédex order from Grookey to Enamorus, and every species first discovered in this generation is included, from the starters to the Legendary Pokémon.

Gen 8 began with Pokémon Sword and Shield, first released in Japan in 2019. For many players, the Pokémon of a single generation are tied to a particular console, a particular region map, and a particular time in their lives. That makes a Gen 8 picker a quick way to revisit favourites, discover species you skipped, or set up a challenge that stays true to the Galar era.

Each result is a species, not an alternate form. Regional variants and other forms added in later games are counted under the generation where the species first appeared. If you want Pokémon from every generation at once, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the Legendary and Starter generators focus on those groups across every region.

Generation 8 and the Galar Region

Starters

Trainers in Pokémon Sword and Shield choose their first partner from three starter Pokémon: Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble. As in every generation, the three cover Grass, Fire and Water, so each one is strong against one of the others and weak to the third.

Legendary and Mythical Pokémon

12 Legendary and Mythical Pokémon debuted in Gen 8: Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, Kubfu, Urshifu, Zarude, Regieleki, Regidrago, Glastrier, Spectrier, Calyrex, Enamorus. Legendary Pokémon usually appear once per game as part of the story, while Mythical Pokémon have mostly been given out through special events.

The Galar Region and Its Pokémon

Galar is based on Great Britain, with Gym battles held in stadiums in front of crowds. Sword and Shield introduced Dynamax and Gigantamax. Generation VIII also includes Legends: Arceus, set in the Sinnoh region's distant past.

Most common types in Gen 8

Of the 96 Pokémon introduced in this generation, 52 have a single type and 44 have two. These types appear most often:

  • Water: 11 Pokémon
  • Dragon: 11 Pokémon
  • Grass: 10 Pokémon
  • Dark: 10 Pokémon
  • Psychic: 9 Pokémon

Tips for a Gen 8-only run

Limiting yourself to the 96 Pokémon of Gen 8 is a popular way to relive the Galar games or to give a newer game a fresh challenge. Decide early whether Pokémon that gained a new evolution in a later generation may evolve past their Gen 8 form, and whether the Legendaries are allowed. With 44 dual-type Pokémon in the list, rolling a few extra candidates and picking the ones that cover each other's weaknesses makes a balanced team much easier to build.

How to Use the Gen 8 Pokémon Generator

  • Galar-only challenge runs: Replay Pokémon Sword and Shield or a remake and only use the Gen 8 Pokémon the generator picks.
  • Draft leagues: Take turns rolling to draft teams limited to Gen 8 species.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask players for the result's type, its evolution line or where it is found in Galar.
  • Nostalgia sketch sessions: Draw a random Gen 8 Pokémon from memory, then compare it with the real design.
  • Team building: Roll six times for a random Galar team and see how far it gets you.
