About the Nuzlocke Challenge Generator

The Nuzlocke Challenge Generator builds a random Pokémon challenge run for you in one click. Each result gives you a region to play through, which starter to pick, a twist that makes the run harder, and, half of the time, a team rule that limits which Pokémon you can use. There are 9 regions, 24 team rules and 18 twists, so there are thousands of possible runs.

It's made for players who have beaten the Pokémon games many times and want a fresh reason to play again. Streamers use it to let chance set the rules for a new series, and friends use it to roll matching challenges and race each other to the Champion.

Every run assumes the standard Nuzlocke rules described below. The generated rules are added on top of them. If a twist doesn't work in the game you're playing, roll again or swap it for one that does.

What Is a Nuzlocke?

The standard rules

A Nuzlocke is a self-imposed set of rules that makes a Pokémon game much harder and more personal. There are two core rules:

  • First encounter only: you may only catch the first wild Pokémon you meet in each area.
  • Fainting is permanent: a Pokémon that faints is treated as gone for good and must be released or boxed forever.

Most players also nickname every Pokémon they catch, so each loss hurts a little more. If your whole party faints, the run is over.

Where the name comes from

The challenge started in 2010 with a webcomic by Nick Franco about playing Pokémon Ruby under these rules. A Nuzleaf in the comic reminded him of John Locke from the TV series Lost, and the name "Nuzlocke" stuck. The rules spread quickly through fan communities. Today there are countless variants, from monotype runs to Soul Links, where two players' Pokémon are paired and a loss for one means a loss for both.

How to Use the Nuzlocke Challenge Generator

  • Start a new run: Roll once and commit to whatever you get. No rerolls unless a rule is impossible in your game.
  • Race a friend: Share one result and see who reaches the Champion with more Pokémon alive.
  • Stream series: Let your chat vote to reroll the twist once, then lock in the rest.
  • Escalating difficulty: Roll an extra twist after every Gym Leader you beat.
  • Pair it with other generators: Use the Random Pokémon or type generators to decide encounters, or the Nature generator to decide how you nickname your team.

Tips for Surviving a Nuzlocke

Nuzlockes are won by preparation, not luck. Before each Gym, look up the Gym Leader's team so you know what's coming, and keep a few Pokémon in reserve that cover their type. Catch everything you're allowed to, even Pokémon you don't plan to use. A spare team member is the difference between a setback and a wiped run.

Take critical hits and surprise moves seriously. A Pokémon at low health should switch out rather than risk one more turn. Save your healing items for boss battles, and train on wild Pokémon rather than trainers when you can, since you can always run from a wild battle unless your twist says otherwise.

Above all, accept the losses. The best Nuzlocke stories come from runs where a favourite fell early and an unlikely catch carried the team to the end.

Example Twists

Level caps: never level your team above the next Gym Leader's strongest Pokémon No items in battle No Pokémon Center visits except right after each Gym Your starter must stay in your party for the whole run Box your starter after the first Gym Fainted Pokémon must be released, not just boxed Limit your party to four Pokémon No running from wild battles Gift and static Pokémon count as that area's encounter Duplicates clause: if your first encounter is a species you already have, you may try again

Frequently Asked Questions

What if a rule does not work in my game? +
Some twists depend on features that not every game has, like the Set battle style. If a rule is impossible in your game, roll again or swap in a similar rule.
What are the basic Nuzlocke rules? +
You may only catch the first wild Pokémon you meet in each area, and any Pokémon that faints is treated as gone for good. Most players also nickname every Pokémon they catch. The generated rules are added on top of these.
Is this an official Pokémon tool? +
No. This is an unofficial fan tool and is not affiliated with Nintendo, Creatures Inc. or GAME FREAK inc. Pokémon data comes from the open PokéAPI project.
Why is it called a Nuzlocke? +
The challenge comes from a 2010 webcomic by Nick Franco. A Nuzleaf in the comic reminded him of John Locke from the TV series Lost, and the name stuck.
Is the Nuzlocke Challenge Generator free? +
Yes — completely free, no account or signup required.
Can I use this for other challenge runs? +
