Random Pokémon Ability Generator
This generator picks a random Ability from all 314 Abilities in the main-series Pokémon games and tells you what it does. You might get a battle-defining classic like Intimidate or Levitate, a weather Ability like Drizzle, or something obscure you've never seen on your team.
It's useful for designing Fakemon, building themed teams, setting up challenge runs and testing your Pokémon knowledge. Each result comes with a one-line summary of the Ability's effect, so you can learn as you roll.
Abilities that only exist in spin-off games are not included. The effect summaries describe how each Ability works in the most recent games. Some Abilities have been adjusted over the years.
Abilities were introduced in Generation III with Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Every Pokémon has exactly one active Ability, which works automatically, without using a turn. Some trigger when the Pokémon enters battle, some when it's hit, and some change how its moves work. Many species can have one of two regular Abilities, so two Pokémon of the same species can play differently.
Generation V added Hidden Abilities: rarer alternatives that most Pokémon only get in special ways, such as certain encounters, raids or events. Later games added items to change Abilities. The Ability Capsule switches between a Pokémon's regular Abilities, and the Ability Patch, introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, unlocks its Hidden Ability.
Take effect the moment the Pokémon is sent out, like lowering stats or changing the weather.
Block a type of move, survive a hit or reduce damage taken.
Make the Pokémon's own attacks stronger or change how they work.
Every generation since Ruby and Sapphire has added new Abilities, often tied to that generation's new battle mechanics. Generation III has the most, because it introduced the whole system at once and gave Abilities to every Pokémon that already existed. Later generations added fewer at a time, usually for new Pokémon and features. The generator gives each Ability the same chance, whichever game it came from, so older and newer Abilities come up equally often.
Drizzle, Drought, Sand Stream and Snow Warning summon rain, harsh sunlight, a sandstorm or snow the moment their holder enters battle. Since Generation VI, weather from an Ability lasts five turns. Before that, it lasted until something replaced it. Generation VII added the terrain Abilities, such as Electric Surge and Psychic Surge, which power up moves of one type while the terrain lasts. Whole teams are built around these Abilities.
Some Abilities belong to a single Pokémon. Shedinja's Wonder Guard means only super effective moves can hurt it, and Mimikyu's Disguise lets it shrug off the first hit. Other Abilities punish attackers. Static and Flame Body can paralyse or burn a Pokémon that makes contact, while Rough Skin and Iron Barbs damage it. Protean and Libero change the holder's type to match the move it uses, and Generation IX limited them to once each time the Pokémon enters battle.
