Random Steel Type Pokémon Generator

Random Steel-Type Pokémon

Gholdengo
Pick a random Steel-type Pokémon from all 65 Steel types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Steel-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Steel-type Pokémon from all 65 species that have Steel as one of their types, from Magnemite to Iron Crown. 10 of them are pure Steel types, and the other 55 pair Steel with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Steel-type Pokémon are based on metal, armour, machines and tools. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Steel-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Steel-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Steel Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Steel type was added in Generation II, so some older Pokémon were given it later. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Steel-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Steel moves

  • Super effective against: Rock, Ice, Fairy
  • Not very effective against: Steel, Fire, Water, Electric
  • No effect on: none

When defending as a Steel type

  • Weak to: Fighting, Ground, Fire
  • Resists: Normal, Flying, Rock, Bug, Steel, Grass, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Fairy
  • Immune to: Poison

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Steel-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Steel-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Steel types needs teammates that can take the hits Steel can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Fighting attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Ghost, Psychic, Fairy
  • Ground attacks: resisted by Flying, Bug, Grass
  • Fire attacks: resisted by Rock, Fire, Water, Dragon

Common type pairings

55 of the 65 Steel-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Steel/Psychic: 8 Pokémon
  • Steel/Rock: 7 Pokémon
  • Steel/Fairy: 6 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Steel types with different partners can need very different teammates.

How many Steel-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Tips for battling with Steel types

Steel moves hit Rock, Ice, Fairy Pokémon for double damage, so a Steel-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. On defence, Steel types are completely immune to Poison moves, which makes them useful for switching in safely against those attacks. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Steel types get the most out of Steel moves.

How to Use the Steel-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Steel team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Fighting, Ground, Fire.

  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
