Pick a random Ice-type Pokémon from all 48 Ice types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Ice-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Ice-type Pokémon from all 48 species that have Ice as one of their types, from Dewgong to Chien-Pao. 16 of them are pure Ice types, and the other 32 pair Ice with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Ice-type Pokémon are based on polar animals, snow spirits and frozen landscapes. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Ice-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Ice-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Ice Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Ice type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Ice-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Ice moves

  • Super effective against: Flying, Ground, Grass, Dragon
  • Not very effective against: Steel, Fire, Water, Ice
  • No effect on: none

When defending as a Ice type

  • Weak to: Fighting, Rock, Steel, Fire
  • Resists: Ice
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Ice-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Ice-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Ice types needs teammates that can take the hits Ice can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Fighting attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Ghost, Psychic, Fairy
  • Rock attacks: resisted by Fighting, Ground, Steel
  • Steel attacks: resisted by Steel, Fire, Water, Electric
  • Fire attacks: resisted by Rock, Fire, Water, Dragon

Common type pairings

32 of the 48 Ice-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Ice/Water: 8 Pokémon
  • Ice/Dragon: 4 Pokémon
  • Ice/Psychic: 3 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Ice types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Ice-type Pokémon by generation

How many Ice-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Gen 1: 5 Gen 2: 5 Gen 3: 6 Gen 4: 6 Gen 5: 7 Gen 6: 4 Gen 7: 1 Gen 8: 7 Gen 9: 7

Tips for battling with Ice types

Ice moves hit Flying, Ground, Grass, Dragon Pokémon for double damage, so a Ice-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Ice types get the most out of Ice moves.

How to Use the Ice-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Ice team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Fighting, Rock, Steel, Fire.
  • Type-locked challenge runs: Only catch the Ice-type Pokémon the generator picks for your next playthrough or Nuzlocke.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Ice-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
