Random Bug Type Pokémon Generator

Random Bug-Type Pokémon

Heracross
Pick a random Bug-type Pokémon from all 92 Bug types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Bug-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Bug-type Pokémon from all 92 species that have Bug as one of their types, from Caterpie to Slither Wing. 23 of them are pure Bug types, and the other 69 pair Bug with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Bug-type Pokémon are based on insects, spiders and other arthropods. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Bug-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Bug-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Bug Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Bug type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Bug-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Bug moves

  • Super effective against: Grass, Psychic, Dark
  • Not very effective against: Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Fairy
  • No effect on: none

When defending as a Bug type

  • Weak to: Flying, Rock, Fire
  • Resists: Fighting, Ground, Grass
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Bug-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Bug-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Bug types needs teammates that can take the hits Bug can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Flying attacks: resisted by Rock, Steel, Electric
  • Rock attacks: resisted by Fighting, Ground, Steel
  • Fire attacks: resisted by Rock, Fire, Water, Dragon

Common type pairings

69 of the 92 Bug-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Bug/Flying: 13 Pokémon
  • Bug/Poison: 12 Pokémon
  • Bug/Grass: 6 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Bug types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Bug-type Pokémon by generation

How many Bug-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Gen 1: 12 Gen 2: 10 Gen 3: 14 Gen 4: 9 Gen 5: 18 Gen 6: 3 Gen 7: 11 Gen 8: 8 Gen 9: 7

Tips for battling with Bug types

Bug moves hit Grass, Psychic, Dark Pokémon for double damage, so a Bug-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Bug types get the most out of Bug moves.

How to Use the Bug-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Bug team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Flying, Rock, Fire.

  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Bug-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
