Pick a random Ground-type Pokémon from all 75 Ground types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Ground-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Ground-type Pokémon from all 75 species that have Ground as one of their types, from Sandshrew to Ting-Lu. 17 of them are pure Ground types, and the other 58 pair Ground with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Ground-type Pokémon are based on burrowing animals, desert creatures and the earth itself. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Ground-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Ground-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Ground Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Ground type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Ground-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Ground moves

  • Super effective against: Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire, Electric
  • Not very effective against: Bug, Grass
  • No effect on: Flying

When defending as a Ground type

  • Weak to: Water, Grass, Ice
  • Resists: Poison, Rock
  • Immune to: Electric

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Ground-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Ground-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Ground types needs teammates that can take the hits Ground can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Water attacks: resisted by Water, Grass, Dragon
  • Grass attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass, Dragon
  • Ice attacks: resisted by Steel, Fire, Water, Ice

Common type pairings

58 of the 75 Ground-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Ground/Rock: 9 Pokémon
  • Ground/Water: 9 Pokémon
  • Ground/Dragon: 6 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Ground types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Ground-type Pokémon by generation

How many Ground-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Gen 1: 14 Gen 2: 10 Gen 3: 13 Gen 4: 10 Gen 5: 11 Gen 6: 2 Gen 7: 4 Gen 8: 4 Gen 9: 7

Tips for battling with Ground types

Ground moves hit Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire, Electric Pokémon for double damage, so a Ground-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Watch out for Flying types, though: Ground moves have no effect on them at all, so keep a move of another type ready. On defence, Ground types are completely immune to Electric moves, which makes them useful for switching in safely against those attacks. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Ground types get the most out of Ground moves.

How to Use the Ground-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Ground team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Water, Grass, Ice.

  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Ground-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
