Random Dragon-Type Pokémon

Vibrava
Pick a random Dragon-type Pokémon from all 70 Dragon types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Dragon-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Dragon-type Pokémon from all 70 species that have Dragon as one of their types, from Dratini to Raging Bolt. 13 of them are pure Dragon types, and the other 57 pair Dragon with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Dragon-type Pokémon are based on dragons and serpents from myths around the world. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Dragon-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Dragon-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Dragon Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Dragon type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Dragon-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Dragon moves

  • Super effective against: Dragon
  • Not very effective against: Steel
  • No effect on: Fairy

When defending as a Dragon type

  • Weak to: Ice, Dragon, Fairy
  • Resists: Fire, Water, Grass, Electric
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Dragon-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Dragon-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Dragon types needs teammates that can take the hits Dragon can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Ice attacks: resisted by Steel, Fire, Water, Ice
  • Dragon attacks: resisted by Steel, Fairy
  • Fairy attacks: resisted by Poison, Steel, Fire

Common type pairings

57 of the 70 Dragon-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Dragon/Flying: 6 Pokémon
  • Dragon/Ground: 6 Pokémon
  • Dragon/Water: 5 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Dragon types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Dragon-type Pokémon by generation

How many Dragon-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Tips for battling with Dragon types

Dragon moves hit Dragon Pokémon for double damage, so a Dragon-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Watch out for Fairy types, though: Dragon moves have no effect on them at all, so keep a move of another type ready. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Dragon types get the most out of Dragon moves.

How to Use the Dragon-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Dragon team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Ice, Dragon, Fairy.
  • Type-locked challenge runs: Only catch the Dragon-type Pokémon the generator picks for your next playthrough or Nuzlocke.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Dragon-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
