Random Poison Type Pokémon Generator

Random Poison-Type Pokémon

Grafaiai
Pick a random Poison-type Pokémon from all 83 Poison types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Poison-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Poison-type Pokémon from all 83 species that have Poison as one of their types, from Bulbasaur to Pecharunt. 16 of them are pure Poison types, and the other 67 pair Poison with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Poison-type Pokémon are based on venomous animals, toxic plants and pollution. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Poison-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Poison-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Poison Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Poison type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Poison-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Poison moves

  • Super effective against: Grass, Fairy
  • Not very effective against: Poison, Ground, Rock, Ghost
  • No effect on: Steel

When defending as a Poison type

  • Weak to: Ground, Psychic
  • Resists: Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass, Fairy
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Poison-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Poison-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Poison types needs teammates that can take the hits Poison can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Ground attacks: resisted by Flying, Bug, Grass
  • Psychic attacks: resisted by Steel, Psychic, Dark

Common type pairings

67 of the 83 Poison-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Poison/Grass: 14 Pokémon
  • Poison/Bug: 12 Pokémon
  • Poison/Water: 6 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Poison types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Poison-type Pokémon by generation

How many Poison-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Gen 1: 33 Gen 2: 4 Gen 3: 5 Gen 4: 8 Gen 5: 7 Gen 6: 2 Gen 7: 7 Gen 8: 5 Gen 9: 12

Tips for battling with Poison types

Poison moves hit Grass, Fairy Pokémon for double damage, so a Poison-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Watch out for Steel types, though: Poison moves have no effect on them at all, so keep a move of another type ready. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Poison types get the most out of Poison moves.

How to Use the Poison-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Poison team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Ground, Psychic.
  • Type-locked challenge runs: Only catch the Poison-type Pokémon the generator picks for your next playthrough or Nuzlocke.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Poison-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
