About the Random Pokémon Held Item Generator

This generator picks a random held item from 103 items that Pokémon can hold in battle, and tells you what it does. The list covers competitive staples like Leftovers, Life Orb, Focus Sash and the Choice items, type-boosting items like Charcoal and Mystic Water, and tricky items like the Flame Orb and Iron Ball that hinder the holder on purpose.

Use it for held-item challenges, team building, trivia and learning what all those items in your bag actually do. Each result includes a short summary of the item's effect.

Berries, Mega Stones, Z-Crystals and items that only work for a single species are left out. Berries have their own generator, linked at the bottom of this page.

How Held Items Work

One item per Pokémon

Held items were introduced in Generation II with Pokémon Gold and Silver. Each Pokémon can hold one item, which works automatically in battle. Some, like Leftovers, work every turn. Others, like the Focus Sash, are used up after a single use. Choosing the right item is a big part of team building, since the same Pokémon can play very differently depending on what it holds.

Items that change the battle

Some held items affect more than their holder. Moves like Trick and Switcheroo swap items between Pokémon, so players can pass a Choice Scarf or a Flame Orb to an opponent. Others, like the Eject Button and Red Card, force Pokémon to switch out. Newer games added items that interact with terrain, weather and entry hazards, such as the Terrain Extender and Heavy-Duty Boots.

How to Use the Held Item Generator

  • Random item challenge: Roll an item for each team member and make every one of them work.
  • Team building: Roll an item and find the Pokémon that would use it best.
  • Nuzlocke twists: Lock each team member to a random item for the whole run.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask players what the item does or which generation added it.
  • Tabletop games: Use random held items as loot in a Pokémon-themed campaign.

Popular Held Items

Leftovers
Steady healing

Restores a sixteenth of the holder's max HP at the end of every turn.

Choice Scarf
Speed at a cost

Boosts Speed by 50% but locks the holder into the first move it uses.

Focus Sash
One more turn

Lets a Pokémon at full HP survive a knockout hit with 1 HP, once.

Held Items by Kind

  • Items that hinder the holder: 6 items
  • Choice items: 3 items
  • General held items: 72 items
  • Type-boosting items: 22 items

Type-boosting items raise the power of moves of one type. Examples include Charcoal for Fire, Magnet for Electric, and the Incense items, some of which also affect breeding. The three Choice items (Band, Specs and Scarf) give a big boost to Attack, Special Attack or Speed in exchange for locking the holder into one move.

Items that hinder the holder, like the Toxic Orb, Flame Orb, Iron Ball and Lagging Tail, seem useless until they're paired with the right Ability or passed to an opponent with Trick. They're a favourite of creative team builders, and a fun twist for a random item challenge.

Example Held Items

Choosing the Right Held Item

  • Hard hitters: Life Orb raises the power of the holder's moves by 30% but costs a tenth of its max HP each time it attacks. The Choice Band and Choice Specs give an even bigger boost but lock the holder into one move.
  • Tanks: The Assault Vest raises Special Defense by 50% but only allows attacking moves. The Rocky Helmet damages any Pokémon that hits the holder with a contact move.
  • Not-yet-evolved Pokémon: Eviolite raises Defense and Special Defense by 50% for any Pokémon that can still evolve, which makes some middle-stage Pokémon surprisingly sturdy.
  • Setup sweepers: The Weakness Policy sharply raises Attack and Special Attack when the holder is hit by a super effective move, turning a weakness into a strength.
  • Leads and utility: The Focus Sash guarantees one more turn, and Heavy-Duty Boots let a Pokémon ignore entry hazards like Stealth Rock when it switches in.
