Random Pokémon Type Generator

Random Pokémon Type

Rock
Pick a random Pokémon type from all 18, Normal to Fairy, with its strengths and weaknesses. Great for monotype challenges, Fakemon design, and type trivia.

About the Random Pokémon Type Generator

This generator picks one of the 18 Pokémon types at random, from Normal and Fire to Dragon, Steel and Fairy. It's built for monotype challenges, fan-made Pokémon design, gym leader roleplay and type trivia. Anywhere you need a type chosen fairly, one click does it.

Types are the backbone of Pokémon battles. Every Pokémon has one or two types, and every attack has exactly one. The matchups between them decide which attacks deal double damage, which deal half, and which have no effect at all. The chart further down this page shows what each type is strong against and weak to.

Want a Pokémon rather than a type? Each type has its own generator too. Use the links at the bottom of the page to pick a random Fire-type, Water-type or any other type of Pokémon.

How Pokémon Types Developed

From 15 types to 18

The original Pokémon Red and Green had 15 types. Pokémon Gold and Silver added Dark and Steel in Generation II, partly to rein in the very strong Psychic types of the first games. Fairy followed in Generation VI with Pokémon X and Y. It was added to balance the powerful Dragon type, and several older Pokémon, such as Clefairy and Jigglypuff, became Fairy types too.

Same-type attack bonus

A Pokémon's type also affects its own attacks. When it uses a move that matches one of its types, the move gets a 50% power boost, known as the same-type attack bonus (STAB). That's why a Pokémon's type decides both what it's weak to and what it hits hardest with.

How to Use the Pokémon Type Generator

  • Monotype runs: Roll a type and play through a game using only Pokémon of that type.
  • Fakemon design: Roll one or two types and design an original Pokémon around them.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Give each gym in a fan region or tabletop campaign a random type.
  • Dual-type ideas: Roll twice to find unusual type combinations that no Pokémon has yet.
  • Type-chart practice: Roll a type and name its weaknesses before you check the chart.

Each type has a 1 in 18 chance on every roll. The 18 types can be paired into 153 different dual-type combinations, and fan designers often hunt for pairings no official Pokémon has used yet. Rolling twice is a quick way to find one. If you get the same type twice, treat it as a single-type Pokémon or roll again.
