Random Rock Type Pokémon Generator

Random Rock-Type Pokémon

Iron Boulder
Pick a random Rock-type Pokémon from all 74 Rock types across nine generations. Great for monotype teams, type-locked runs, and trivia.

About the Random Rock-Type Pokémon Generator

This generator picks a random Rock-type Pokémon from all 74 species that have Rock as one of their types, from Geodude to Iron Boulder. 17 of them are pure Rock types, and the other 57 pair Rock with a second type. Every generation from Kanto to Paldea is included.

Rock-type Pokémon are based on stones, minerals, fossils and prehistoric animals. Whether you want a new team member, a prompt for a drawing, or a trivia question, one click gives you a Rock-type Pokémon to work with.

Each result is the Pokémon's standard form. Regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other alternate forms that change a Pokémon's type are not included, so the list matches what you would find by searching the National Pokédex for Rock-type Pokémon. If you want any type at all, the Random Pokémon Generator covers the whole National Pokédex, and the generation generators let you stick to a single region.

Rock Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The Rock type has been part of the series since the first games in Generation I. Knowing how it matches up against other types is the key to using Rock-type Pokémon well in battle. These are the current type-chart matchups:

When attacking with Rock moves

  • Super effective against: Flying, Bug, Fire, Ice
  • Not very effective against: Fighting, Ground, Steel
  • No effect on: none

When defending as a Rock type

  • Weak to: Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, Grass
  • Resists: Normal, Flying, Poison, Fire
  • Immune to: none

Dual-type Pokémon combine the matchups of both their types, so a Rock-type Pokémon's second type can cancel out a weakness or double it.

Building a Rock-Type Team

Covering the weak spots

A team built around Rock types needs teammates that can take the hits Rock can't. For each weakness, these types take reduced or no damage:

  • Fighting attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Ghost, Psychic, Fairy
  • Ground attacks: resisted by Flying, Bug, Grass
  • Steel attacks: resisted by Steel, Fire, Water, Electric
  • Water attacks: resisted by Water, Grass, Dragon
  • Grass attacks: resisted by Flying, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass, Dragon

Common type pairings

57 of the 74 Rock-type Pokémon have a second type. The most common partners are:

  • Rock/Water: 11 Pokémon
  • Rock/Ground: 9 Pokémon
  • Rock/Steel: 7 Pokémon

A second type changes a Pokémon's matchups, so two Rock types with different partners can need very different teammates.

Rock-type Pokémon by generation

How many Rock-type Pokémon each generation introduced:

Tips for battling with Rock types

Rock moves hit Flying, Bug, Fire, Ice Pokémon for double damage, so a Rock-type Pokémon is a strong pick whenever you expect to face those types. Remember that a Pokémon's own type gives matching moves a 50% power boost, so Rock types get the most out of Rock moves.

How to Use the Rock-Type Pokémon Generator

  • Monotype teams: Roll six times to build an all-Rock team, then work out how to cover its weaknesses to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, Grass.
  • Type-locked challenge runs: Only catch the Rock-type Pokémon the generator picks for your next playthrough or Nuzlocke.
  • Trivia & quizzes: Ask friends to name the result's second type, its evolution or the generation it debuted in.
  • Drawing prompts: Sketch the Pokémon you get, or redesign it in a different art style.
  • Gym leader roleplay: Build a themed Rock-type gym team for a tabletop game or fan story.
