Magic: The Gathering God Name Generator

Generate god names in the style of Magic: The Gathering. MTG gods are legendary indestructible enchantment creatures representing the divine aspects of their plane's belief system. Theros gave us Heliod, God of the Sun; Erebos, God of the Dead; Purphoros, God of the Forge; Nylea, God of the Hunt; and Thassa, God of the Sea. Amonkhet added the cruel god-pharaoh Nicol Bolas as the centre of a divine pantheon. Kaldheim brought Norse-style warrior gods. The generator produces god names in two phoneme styles: masculine-coded names using harder consonant onsets (c, kr, x, z) with vowel-ending suffixes suggesting power and finality; and feminine-coded names using softer onset consonants (f, ph, th) with open vowel endings suggesting mystery and grace. Both styles append a domain from a list of 115 concepts — 'God of Battle', 'God of the Moon', 'God of Harvest' — reflecting the real Theros god format. Perfect for Theros fan content, original pantheon worldbuilding, tabletop RPG divine beings, or any fantasy project needing names for indestructible, plane-defining deities with specific divine portfolios.

Gods in Magic: The Gathering

The Theros Pantheon

Theros introduced the most complete pantheon of MTG gods, drawn from Greek mythology. Heliod, God of the Sun (white); Thassa, God of the Sea (blue); Erebos, God of the Dead (black); Purphoros, God of the Forge (red); and Nylea, God of the Hunt (green) form the original five. Born of the Gods added Ephara, Phenax, Mogis, Xenagos, and Karametra. Journey into Nyx completed the cycle with Athreos, Iroas, Kruphix, Pharika, and Keranos — fifteen gods in total, one for each color pair plus the mono-colored cycle.

Gods Beyond Theros

Amonkhet presented an Egyptian-inspired pantheon ruled by Nicol Bolas posing as a god — Oketra, Kefnet, Bontu, Hazoret, and Rhonas formed the five gods of that plane, each representing virtues Bolas corrupted to serve his ends. Kaldheim featured Alrund, Valki, Koma, and other Norse-inspired divine beings, though called different titles. The Theros format produced some of the most beloved Commander legends in Magic history, as each god's devotion mechanic created unique deck-building around their color identity.

How to Use These Names

  • Build an original MTG-style pantheon for fan fiction, custom cards, or homebrew formats with gods in every color identity.
  • Design Theros or Amonkhet fan content featuring divine beings not covered by official card releases.
  • Name deities for tabletop RPG campaigns in D&D, Pathfinder, or any system with an active pantheon.
  • Create the religion and mythology of original fantasy worlds with gods that have specific domains and phonemic identity.
  • Write divine-conflict storylines featuring named gods competing over domains like War, Harvest, or the Underworld.
  • Design Commander-style legendary god cards for custom sets with authentic Theros naming conventions.

What Makes a Good MTG God Name?

Xarvoias

Masculine-coded god names use hard onset consonants (c, kr, x, z, ph) with complex medials and vowel-ending suffixes — the result evokes classical Greek masculine name endings (-os, -as, -ias) that signal divine authority and ancient power.

Phythaea

Feminine-coded god names use softer onset consonants (f, h, k, l, ph, th) and open vowel endings (-ea, -ia, -ae) that suggest the Greek feminine name tradition — Thassa, Karametra, Nylea, Pharika. The open ending gives the name a flowing, divine quality.

, God of War

The domain suffix "God of [Domain]" is the defining format from Theros — every god card carries this structure. The generator draws from 115+ domains spanning every aspect of divine portfolio, from "God of Harvest" to "God of the Underworld" to "God of Good Luck", covering the full range of real-world polytheistic traditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are generated god names free to use? +
Yes — all generated names are free to use in personal or commercial creative projects. The generator produces novel combinations and does not reproduce trademarked card names from Magic: The Gathering.
What is the "God of [Domain]" format based on? +
The format directly mirrors real Theros card names: Heliod, God of the Sun; Thassa, God of the Sea; Erebos, God of the Dead; Purphoros, God of the Forge; Nylea, God of the Hunt. This two-part structure (divine name + domain) reflects how Greek-inspired polytheistic pantheons assign divine portfolios. The generator includes 115+ domains covering the full spectrum of real-world pantheon traditions.
What makes MTG gods indestructible? +
Theros gods are legendary enchantment creatures with indestructible — but they only function as creatures if your devotion to their color(s) is high enough. Devotion counts the colored mana symbols in the mana costs of permanents you control. If devotion falls below the threshold, the god loses all creature abilities and becomes a non-creature enchantment that cannot attack or block. This "devotion" mechanic was designed to make gods feel genuinely divine — requiring faith (devotion) to manifest.
How many gods are in the Theros block? +
Theros block contains fifteen god cards across three sets. Theros introduced five mono-colored gods: Heliod (white), Thassa (blue), Erebos (black), Purphoros (red), and Nylea (green). Born of the Gods added ten more: Ephara, Phenax, Mogis, Xenagos, and Karametra — one for each color pair in allied and enemy combinations. Journey into Nyx completed the cycle with Athreos, Iroas, Kruphix, Pharika, and Keranos.
Is there API access to this generator? +
Yes — FunGenerators.com provides API access to this and hundreds of other name generators. Visit the API section for subscription plans and documentation.
Can these god names work for other fictional pantheons? +
Yes — the phoneme patterns and domain system work well for any fantasy pantheon. The masculine-coded names use hard consonant onset patterns similar to Greek masculine names; the feminine-coded names use softer consonants and open vowel endings similar to Greek feminine divine names. The domain list covers agriculture, battle, death, fortune, harvest, the moon, the sea, the underworld, and dozens more.
