About the Random Rick and Morty Character Generator

This generator picks a random character from 826 Rick and Morty characters. They cover the show's first 5 seasons, from the Smith family to one-scene aliens, alternate-reality Ricks and Mortys, and the strangest creatures of the multiverse. Each result tells you the character's species, whether they're alive or dead, where they come from and the episode they first appeared in.

Fans use it for trivia nights, cosplay and costume ideas, drawing prompts, rewatch challenges and "who would win" debates. Because the list includes hundreds of minor characters, it's also a good way to rediscover background gags you may have missed the first time.

The character list comes from the fan-maintained Rick and Morty API. It currently covers 51 episodes, up to S05E10 "Rickmurai Jack" (September 5, 2021). Many characters appear more than once as different versions from across the multiverse, so you may see several Ricks or Mortys with different origins.

About Rick and Morty

The show

Rick and Morty is an adult animated science-fiction comedy created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. It premiered on Adult Swim on December 2, 2013. The series follows Rick Sanchez, a brilliant, reckless scientist, and his anxious grandson Morty Smith, on adventures across space, time and alternate dimensions. Rick's family, Beth, Jerry and Summer, are often pulled in too. The show grew out of an animated short Roiland made for the Channel 101 film festival.

A multiverse of characters

Because the show travels between infinite realities, the same characters appear in many versions. The Rick of the main series is known as Rick C-137, after his home dimension, and the Citadel of Ricks is home to countless other Ricks and Mortys. Add in the aliens, robots, parasites and one-episode creatures, and Rick and Morty has one of the largest casts in animation.

How to Use the Rick and Morty Character Generator

  • Trivia nights: Roll a character and ask players which episode they first appeared in. The answer is in the result.
  • Cosplay and costume ideas: Let the generator pick your next Halloween or convention costume.
  • Drawing prompts: Draw the character from memory, then check how close you got.
  • Rewatch challenges: Roll a character and rewatch the episode where they first appeared.
  • "Who would win" debates: Roll two characters and argue about who wins a fight.
  • Party games: Roll a character for each guest and have them stay in character for the night.
  • Tabletop and roleplay: Use a random character as an NPC or an interdimensional visitor in your campaign.

The Characters by the Numbers

826 Characters
Across 51 episodes

Main cast, recurring favourites, alternate versions and one-scene cameos.

Alive or Dead
Alive: 439 · Dead: 287 · Unknown: 100

The multiverse is a dangerous place, and many characters don't survive their episode.

From humans and aliens to robots, Cronenbergs and mythological creatures.

Who Shows Up Most

Most appearances

  • Rick Sanchez: 51 episodes
  • Morty Smith: 51 episodes
  • Summer Smith: 42 episodes
  • Beth Smith: 42 episodes
  • Jerry Smith: 39 episodes
  • Jessica: 12 episodes

Most common species

  • Human: 366 characters
  • Alien: 205 characters
  • Humanoid: 68 characters
  • Animal: 55 characters
  • Robot: 51 characters
  • Mythological Creature: 46 characters

Every character has the same chance on each roll, so a Smith family member is no more likely than a one-line background alien. With so many minor characters, most rolls will be someone you have to think about for a moment.

Reading a Result

Each result shows the character's name, followed by four details. The first is the species, with a more specific kind in brackets where the show gives one, such as "Alien (Lizard)". Next comes their status at the end of their last appearance: alive, dead or unknown. Then their origin, which is often a planet or a numbered dimension, and finally the season and episode code of their first appearance, so you know exactly where to find them.

Statuses reflect what the show has shown on screen. In a series with clones, cloning vats and alternate realities, "dead" isn't always permanent, which is part of the fun of debating a result with friends.

New characters each season

  • Season 1: 210 characters first appeared
  • Season 2: 136 characters first appeared
  • Season 3: 150 characters first appeared
  • Season 4: 177 characters first appeared
  • Season 5: 153 characters first appeared
